Learning Communities offer activities, opportunities and relationships to enhance your education beyond the formal curriculum. Each medical and physician assistant student is assigned to one of four communities, where they build community through activity.

Bean

William Bennett Bean, MD served as the Chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine at Iowa from 1948-1977, building a great academic enterprise that encouraged excellence in patient care, teaching, and research.

Boulware

Lois Boulware, MD, MS was a leader in the creation of our own Student Health Service and originator of the patient advocacy program and Surgery Day Lounge at UI Health Care.

We sponsor philanthropy events for United Action for Youth with trivia nights, Ride 4 Youth charity bike ride, and more.

Flocks

Rubin H. Flocks, MD, was one of the pioneers in urology. He mapped the blood supply to the prostate, innovated prostatic surgical techniques, and developed radio-isotopic treatment for prostate cancer. Dr. Flocks cared genuinely for his patients and his students.

We sponsor philanthropy events for University of Iowa Mobile Clinic and Iowa City Free Medical and Dental Clinic with the Doc Dash 5k, and the Stoppelmoor-Adams Stroke Education and Research Fund through Groundstrokes for Strokes tennis seminars.

McCowen

Jennie McCowen, MD was one of the first women to enroll and graduate from the University of Iowa Medical Department in 1876. She directed the Mount Pleasant Health System and worked on various projects supporting women, children, and the mentally ill.
