The University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine EQUAL Meds (Iowa Queer and Allied Medical Students) is an active student group at the medical school with strong support from the administration, faculty, staff, and students.
Our mission is to educate the CCOM medical community on health issues that pertain to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and/or questioning (LGBTQ) patients and to provide a support network for LGBTQ health professional students.
We strive to be a liaison for the faculty and staff as they continue to incorporate LGBTQ-specific health topics into the curriculum. EQUAL Meds supplements the required curriculum with additional educational lectures, panels, and events held throughout the year.
A large part of our mission is to provide a forum where LGBTQ-identified students can interact with other graduate and professional students as well as with faculty and staff members from the larger University of Iowa Health Care community. EQUAL Meds sponsors social gatherings that provide opportunities for networking, mentoring, and creating community.
